Mind-Body Connection: The Link Between Stress and Vascular Health

Our modern world is full of stressors, from the demands of work to the 24 hour news cycle and failing to manage stress can have an impact on physical health. It has long been understood that there is a link between blood pressure and stress, with chronic stress increasing the risk of cardiac disease. Recent research even indicates that when there is significant damage to emotional health, vascular risk of damage increases dramatically. Understanding how our minds and bodies are connected can help us protect our physical and mental health.

Connection Between Chronic Stress and Vein Damage Explained at Revamp Heart & Vascular Institute

Stress Effects on Circulation

Stress is not necessarily a negative force. The body naturally responds to danger by releasing hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, so that you can act quickly to deal with the threat. The problem is that when stress is ongoing, the body remains in that heightened state, and this can take a toll on both body and mind. Those stress hormones increase your heart rate, raise your blood pressure, and increase the blood flow to your extremities. After the danger passes, your circulation goes back to normal, but what if the danger signals are ongoing? There is a known link between that chronic state of high adrenaline and cortisol and heart disease. When your heart rate and blood pressure remain in that heightened state, it can increase your risk of heart disease, including heart attacks and strokes, and can damage your veins.

The Vein-Stress Link: Vein Health and Anxiety

Recently, a study on mice looked at the impact of chronic stress on the veins in their brains. Researchers exposed mice to chronic “social defeat,” allowing them to be bullied by another mouse continually. What they discovered is that this prolonged stress actually damaged the blood vessels in the brains of these mice, leading to microbleeds. In humans, we know that microbleeds in the brain are linked to strokes and mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and even dementia. What’s more, the stressed mice experienced altered activity in the genes of the cells that keep blood out of the brain. Alleviated stress, however, triggered the healing process, sending white blood vessels to the damaged areas to repair them.

Mental Health and PAD

Another result of stress is the buildup of plaque in the arteries, known as atherosclerosis. This buildup narrows the arteries, restricting blood flow and increasing the risk of conditions like Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). Interestingly, research indicates that people being treated for PAD are more likely to develop mental health conditions like anxiety and depression.

Protecting Your Vein Health

It is clear, from numerous studies, that stress can negatively impact your circulatory system. However, damage to your cardiovascular system can also cause stress, resulting in a vicious cycle. Consider varicose veins, for example. When damage to the vascular system results in unsightly varicose veins, this creates stress, not only from the physical discomfort, but also from the social distress of reduced self-esteem stemming from the appearance of the veins. Addressing the physical symptoms is important, but of equal importance is managing stress and improving mental health. This can be accomplished by engaging in regular exercise, practicing techniques like mindfulness and meditation, getting enough sleep, eating nutritious food, and finding ways to reduce the stressors in your life.
